Because KS is not now curable, the disappearance of detectable disease (clinical remission) means only that the disease's presence cannot be demonstrated at a particular time. The question really is how long treatment should be continued once remission has been obtained.
It is often the case that patients in either complete or partial remission who discontinue treatment relapse quite rapidly. If the treatment program does not cause severe side effects and does not involve drugs that cause more damage the longer they are used, treatment should continue indefinitely, although often at a reduced frequency.
